Tree planting can be intimating for an amateur gardener. There’s more to planting and nurturing a tree than just digging a hole and placing a plant. Our team at Hudson Tree Services is prepared to guide you through everything you need to know about tree planting.

Everything You Need to Know About Tree Planting

  • Choosing a Tree – There are several different types of trees to choose from, whether it be a shade tree, fruit tree, a tree that will attract wildlife, or a blossoming tree. Pick whatever tree suits best for you and your property, but keep in mind the climate you live in. Depending on your area, you may want to choose a tree that can tolerate extremely cold winters, for example.
  • Prepare the Spot – Once you choose your tree, begin to prepare the spot you want to plant it. When choosing a spot, make sure the area has good soil and plenty of sunlight. After choosing a place, remove the grass, and then dig a hole that is about the same depth of the plant’s container and roughly 3 times as wide as the container so the tree has room to grow.
  • Planting – After preparing your spot, carefully place the tree in the hole, and then backfill with the soil you dug out. The flare of your tree should be slightly exposed to promote the growth of your tree.
  • Nurture – After you have successfully planted your tree, it’s important to nurture it. Adding mulch is a great way to make your tree look nice while providing moisture to the soil. Additionally, you’ll want to water your tree every day for 2 weeks, and then every 2-3 days after that for the next 12 weeks or so.
